I Love Counted Cross Stitch

Frequently Asked Questions

We are here to help one another!

Q: My pattern calls for 28-count linen but I'd rather use Aida. What count would I use?

A: Since cross stitch on linen is done over two threads instead of over one square as with Aida, to convert fabrics from Linen to Aida, divide by two. Thus, substitute 14-count Aida for 28-count linen.

Q: One of my friends asked me if I was going to "prepare" my floss by rinsing it. What did she mean?

A: Most regular embroidery floss is colorfast. Some colors may bleed slightly. Dark colors and reds are prone to slight bleeding.
Test the floss by soaking a small amount in cool water.
If the water starts to turn color, rinse the floss under    cool running water until the water runs clear.

Q: How can I substitute or match floss colors?

A:
There are several ways you can match floss or substitute floss.

  1. Conversion charts
  2. Floss color cards
  3. Your own judgement
  4. Lay a strand of one shade of floss among the other shade of floss, close one eye and see if you can see where one floss begins and the other ends.
